Artist Statement
When I was new in Durango, and new in this art class, I had little to no experience in creating or observing art. I honestly took the class because I thought it would be fun and easy, but in the first couple of weeks of participating in the class I quickly realized I was wrong. My first few projects were kind of rough as you'll see down below. Although I'm not some great artist now I am truly proud of the progress I have made in my skills of creating, analyzing, interpreting, and observing art. I can't say that I have a specific artistic style, but I love creating art that makes a statement. When I start making a piece I have 3 goals in mind, to catch someones eye, to make them realize my statement, and to have them leave thinking about it. I feel like a really exemplify this in Double-Edged Words, A Symbol of Hope, and Joshua 1:9. To me, art means that you have the freedom to express yourself or a message or anything that you want to on a blank canvas. I think art is a great way to say a lot without having to use words, which for some people is easier to do. There are endless things you can create and convey with your art.
H'-14 in W'- 12 in "The Words Flew off the Pages..." A book, wire, and hot glue This was the first sculpture I've ever made. I really wanted to use simplicity in this piece. There was only two materials used, wire and a book. I think this is probably my favorite piece because it is simple and beautiful, and expresses a feeling of freedom.
H'-20 in W-32 in "A New Change" A poster-board, pencil, and crayons. This piece was the first piece I've ever made in art class. It explains the time from when I moved from deep East Texas to the mountains of Durango, Colorado. It shows the many differences between the two areas, and how my lifestyle completely had to change. For this piece, I just used a poster-board and drew with a pencil and some crayons.
H- 11 1/2 W- 14 1/2 "Shapes and Sizes" Matting paper, a razor blade In this piece, I can only be credited for the matting.
"Confusion" H-18" W- 12" WC paper, ink, watercolor. This piece is unique because everything I used in this piece I was unfamiliar with. I had never truly worked with watercolor, and I had never worked with an ink pen.
"Symbol of Hope" H- 20" W- 12" Canvas, acrylic paint. This piece is very near and dear to my heart because it displays the previous and ongoing battles of close family members. This painting is one of my most proud works of art because I took my time and made sure everything was exactly as I wanted it down to blending paints to get the perfect shade of pink, the feminine body shape, and other important factors to make this piece perfect to me.
"Double-Edged Words" H- 12" W- 14" Paper, computer. This is more of a statement piece to me because it doesn't show off the artistic elements except for contrasting with color. I used comparative but contrasting words to show peoples different interpretations on men and omens actions, even though they may be the same.
"Joshua 1:9" H- 36" W- 20" Cork Board, water balloons, paint, painters tape. This might be my favorite piece I did out of the entire year, simply because it represents a big part of who I am, and it was so fun to make. I used all of the crazy colors, and textures, and patterns and paints but left the pure white cross standing to show that even in a crazy life God's intentions are pure and He will guide you through all the craziness. Notice it is titled Joshua 1:9 which is roughly quoted, in my favorite version, "Be strong and courageous, do no be afraid, for the Lord God is with you wherever you go" For me personally, this piece really embodies that verse.
Evaluation Going over my art through both semesters I have personally seen vast improvement in myself, my creativity, individuality, and my skills. If I could do anything better, it would be to pay more attention to detail and take more time perfecting my art so I could be even more pleased with the outcome.
